Tips & Tools: Finish What You Start

Ever found yourself going off in all directions at once? Ever experienced what the Red Queen, of Alice in Wonderland fame, once said: “…it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!” Then you need to finish what you start.

THE SECRET TO EXECUTIVE SUCCESS

L. Ron Hubbard wrote an article on 22 February 1968 entitled SLOW ADMIN, where he stated:

“The secret of any executive success is the ability to Complete Cycles of Action Quickly.

“The operative word is COMPLETE.

“Ability is the ability to complete a cycle of action, to handle the matter so it does not have to be handled again.

“Referral is irresponsibility. Executives who refer to others to make a decision aren’t executives. They are irresponsible or are afraid of responsibility. People who are afraid of taking responsibility are not executives. They are laborers.”

Three months later, on 4 May 1968, Mr. Hubbard further spoke about this quality in an article entitled HANDLING SITUATIONS:

“The other day I was looking at why I used to have a high stat businesswise and cinewise* and otherwise, and I suddenly realized I was peculiar in the vicinity in which I operated. I ended cycles. I could end more cycles in less time than any organization could dream up. In other words I was CONCLUDING ACTIONS.

“Ending cycles doesn’t consist of shooting people. It consists of seeing that it stays handled.

“One of the things that has happened in the past is that I have had to rehandle. Situations I had handled became unhandled someplace and I had to rehandle them again.

“What you should specialize in is terminating the end of a situation, not refer it to somebody else.”

Cinewise: cine = cinema or cinematography + wise = with regard to.

Try this work:

  1. Make a list of the incomplete cycles of action in your department or business.
  2. Set a target for yourself on how many cycles of action you will complete this week.
  3. Actively go after completing these cycles fully.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for a month.
  5. Review your production and morale at the end of the month and see the difference it makes!
